The North Monaghan Young Greens held their inaugural meeting this past weekend in the Teach na Daoine building, with members engaging in a lively discussion regarding the upcoming Lisbon Treaty. Present were Louth and Monaghan county councillors Mark Deary and Vincent P Martin, alongside representatives of the newly formed north-Monaghan wing of the Young Green Party. Cllr Deary was the afternoon's special' guest speaker, where he engaged his young colleagues on the merits of the Lisbon Treaty, scheduled for the 12th of June. Issues central to the Green Party's political canon, such as climate change and energy use were discussed, alongside more general topics such as security, and the loss of the European commissioners.
Michael McKeon Green Party Candidate in the last local election was elected Chair of the Louth Green Party at a recent meeting. Speaking after his election McKeon said “I am delighted to be appointed Chair of the Louth Greens. We have a very dedicated and hard working membership who are active in many areas of economic, environmental and community life all over Co. Louth.”
Cllr Mark Dearey has welcomed today's announcement by Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, John Gormley, that Louth is to receive €184,000 in funding to protect and conserve some of its finest built heritage sites, and in particular the increased funding for the walled town projects in Carlingford and Drogheda.
Last week Minister for Energy, Communications and Natural Resources Eamon Ryan said “I have long said that Ireland can be a world leader in sustainable energy”, as he completed the launch of a package enhancing the public financial support system for renewable electricity generation. “Ireland needs to reduce our fossil fuel import bill and our dependence on imported energy sources. Renewable electricity is a critical cornerstone of Ireland’s approach to moving towards a low-carbon and robust economy. Ireland has one of the finest renewable energy resource potentials in the world. Today we are making important steps to ensure that it is tapped”.

Cllr Mark Dearey welcomed the introduction in the Finance Bill, published this week, of a new scheme aimed at supporting investment in new energy-saving equipment by companies. “Section 42 of the Finance Bill introduces a new section into the Taxes Consolidation Act 1997. Capital allowances of 100% of the cost will be available to those companies investing in high energy-efficient equipment." Dearey explained.
On 14-15 June, Co-operation Ireland are bringing its 2 day 200k bike ride to the east coast. It is their intention to use the Dundalk Institute of Technology as the start and finish site on both days.
Louth based Green Party Councillor Mark Dearey has welcomed today's decision by Minister John Gormley to grant the Ward Union a licence to hunt between now and the thirty first of March 2008 but with significant conditions attached.
Mr. John Gormley, T.D., Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, this week announced a tranche of €4 million in funding to assist local authorities to offset the operational costs associated with bring banks and civic amenity facilities.

A big thank you to all who attended our Summer Social event at Ghan House last Thursday evening. Happily the sun shone shone down on Carlingford that evening allowing the Minister Gormley to appreciate our beautiful local landscape in all its glory. I think too, that having the Minister for the Environment in the county so early in his tenure, will be of some assistance on a range of matters into the future.
