About Mark
Born and reared here Cllr Mark Dearey has a passion for Co. Louth. Mark is the eldest of five children and his family have run a family business in Dundalk (Deareys) for decades. Mark is married to Laura, a radiographer working in oncology and they have one child.
Mark was elected the first Green Party Councillor on Dundalk Town Council on 2004.
Mark owns "The Spirit Store" a well known and loved bar and music venue in Dundalk and knows only too well the pressures of working in the SME sector.
Mark first came to the public attention in Co. Louth in 1994 when he and three others formed the STAD Campaign taking a court action against British Nuclear Fuels Limited (BNFL) seeking an end to reprocessing at Sellafield.
After college, Mark worked as a secondary school teacher Colaiste Eanna in Dublin. Mark trained as an organic horticulture farmer and worked in this sector for 9 years.
Mark has been prominent in his advocacy of community policing and wrote the submission to the Justice Forum on the subject, on behalf of Dundalk Town Council.
Mark has led the work in forming a Drugs Action Group to deal with Class A drug use in Dundalk. Mark is also a Director of Turas, the addiction counselling service.
Mark is a Chairman of the revitalised Dundalk St. Patrick's Day Committee.
Mark is also a founding member of Friends of the Earth in Ireland.
Mark believes that where there is a problem, a practical solution is never too far away - it is a matter of clear analysis and hard work to make it happen.
