Dearey welcomes ESB investment in renewables

Green Party Cllr Mark Dearey has welcomed the announcement this week by the ESB that it is to invest €22 billion in a programme that includes halving its carbon emissions in 12 years. Half of the investment package will be spent on securing Ireland's renewable future, with €4 billion directly invested in renewable projects and €6.5billion to be spent on facilitating renewables such as smart metering and smart networks. The company aims to be carbon net-zero by 2035.

Cllr Dearey said: "Some weeks ago I spoke about how the renewable industry provides us in Louth with a fantastic enterprise opportunity and of how we need to use our advantages to become a centre of excellence for green energy research, industry and power generation. Now with this announcement by the ESB, we can see the scale of the opportunity." He continued "The Green Party went into Government to deliver renewable energy for the island of Ireland. Today's announcement that the ESB is to become a green utility company clearly shows that this change is underway."

"By 2020, ESB will be delivering one-third of its electricity from renewable generation. This will include over 1,400 megawatts of wind generation, in addition to wave, tidal and biomass. €11 billion is to be invested by ESB in its networks to ensure the vital infrastructure needed to deliver renewable energy. It will also facilitate the development of up to 6,000 megawatts of wind on the island."

"The company's commitment to a new low carbon future is a signal that every business, every farm, every home and every institution in the state should move in the same direction. Every home in Ireland will have a smart meter in the next five years and smart networks will allow small scale generators to sell their electricity back to the national grid." Dearey concluded ""Taking on this green agenda will help us reduce our dependence on imported fossil fuels, cut our greenhouse gas emissions and secure the future of our local economy and environment."
