Senator Deary, Minister Gormley and Dundalk Chamber of Commerce Chairperson Bill Tosh Meet to Discuss Border Trade


Senator Mark Dearey has described a meeting this morning between the Minister for the Environment John Gormley and Dundalk Chamber boss Bill Tosh and himself as, " worthwhile and clearly focussed on measures to bring down the cost of doing business locally."

Minister Gormley pointed to the fact that he has established a Local Government Efficiency Review Group and that this will deliver better value Local Authorities which in turn will benefit rates payers.

Responding to Mr Tosh who pointed out that the last review of rates in Dundalk happened in 1973, Minister Gormley also undertook to examine what can be done, given the fact that rates inequities that have developed round the town over the years and that rates in Dundalk are very significantly higher that in similar towns such as Athlone ."

Mr. Tosh speaking later said,

"John Gormley demonstrated a clear appreciation of the need attack our cost base in the Border counties and I detected a definite appitite for action on local governnment costs and on the need to widen the revenue streams for Local Government. Any measures in these areas will lessen the burden currently being shouldered by businesses and I look forward to making progress on these fronts."
